ENGINEER – OS & DB BACKUP
- The backup Engineer is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of configuring, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the backups of servers/DBs and handling requests and problem escalations from other departments with regards to backups. The engineer determines the severity of issues (triage), prioritizes issues, performs diagnosis of system and software components to identify root cause, and takes action or recommends corrective action for resolution.
- The engineer will work with infrastructure teams, other technical team teams and vendors to clearly state problems, troubleshoot, diagnose and/or resolve complex backup issues and restorations.
ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support Operations team in a 12×5 team setup, comprised of employees and that provide administration, advanced support and operational management of system backups across the DCs.
- Help in identifying, troubleshooting and resolve technical issues related to the backup failures
- Interfaces with other teams to maintain and schedule backups of the systems and databases in a timely manner
- Identify and improve backup operation processes & procedures by automation.
- Ensure system availability and performance by proactively monitoring the usage and enabling effective alerts.
- Ensure change management processes, incident and problem management processes are followed
CHALLENGES
- Participate in 24×7 on-call support
- Working with counterparts in other global teams
- 24×7 Availability in case of emergencies
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
- 2+ Years of experience in IT industry.
- Medium proficiency with mainstream Linux distributions, such as Red hat 5/6 & CentOS
- Medium proficiency with Windows Server distributions
- Sound background knowledge on Database technologies such as Oracle & MSSQL.
- Understanding of backup technologies & tools.
- Knowledge on TSM backup would be an added advantage
- Previous experience of backup and restorations.
NON-TECHNICAL COMPETENCY
- Should have very good verbal & written communication skills.
- Should be able to work independently with minimum supervision from onsite locations.
- Should be willing to work on extended and irregular hours when required.
- Strong self-starter, motivated to help TEAM in their deliverables
- Should be able to carry out expected tasks without supervision
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks.
- Right attitude, a passion for customer service and good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions in critical situations
EDUCATIONAL & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT or any other equivalent qualification.
