The content of the novel is always life. Each novel describes or constructs a fragment of life, a microcosm, a model, which conveys an understanding of life. For the former novelists, no matter how different their understanding of life is, in each understanding, life is like an object with definite meaning in front of them, and the novel only needs to describe, reproduce, process and explain it. In the context of the collapse of traditional metaphysics, all the clear explanations of life in the past have become problematic, and life is no longer an object with definite meaning, but an unknown field again. When modern philosophy falls into the confusion of meaning, modern fiction also finds that understanding the truth of life is its most difficult mission. In The Betrayed Testament, Kundera talks about the difficulty of knowing the truth of life. This is a paradoxical difficulty. Our real life is made up of every “present concrete”, and the “present concrete” is almost impossible to recognize. On the one hand, it is extremely complex, containing innumerable events, feelings and thoughts, which are as inexhaustible as atoms. There was a row of trees along the street, whose leaves had withered and only bare branches were left. From time to time, pedestrians came face to face and passed me. I think at this moment in every city of the world, there are many people in a hurry, through the days of their lives, to their own death. I talked to people, watched the conversation closely, and immediately found myself out of the conversation, as if another false me was having a false conversation with people. I fell into some delicate state of mind, so I looked back alertly, only to find that my alertness had made the delicate state of mind disappear. A person who dies without knowing what he has lived, we can say that he has not lived. A person who is always looking at what he is living, he actually stands outside of life. How on earth can a person live? Second, the novel is close to philosophy. How to find the lost “present” is the concern of modern novelists. Now the “loss” is not quantitative, but qualitative.
Therefore, it is useless to rely on the naturalistic accumulation of details of life in quantity, and the only feasible way is to retrieve them qualitatively. The so-called qualitative retrieval is to discover the ontological structure of the “present concreteness”, that is, to reveal the basic situation of life by capturing the situations and details of the hidden codes of existence in the “present”. Kundera believes that this is the new direction opened up by Kafka. Kundera often uses Heidegger’s category of “existence” to express his understanding of life. The basic requirement is still reality, but not in the sense of theory of reflection, but in the sense of ontology, and what the category of “existence” expresses is the reality of life in this ontological sense. The “falsehood” in the novel, all kinds of techniques and fictions, serve the truth in this ontological sense, if not so, it is only pure falsehood-pure personal playfulness and reverie. Sometimes, Kundera also distinguishes “existence” from “reality”. For example, in The Art of Fiction, he wrote, “Fiction is not a study of reality, but of existence.” Everything that happens belongs to reality, and existence is always related to the basic situation of life in the world. The mission of fiction is not to state what has happened, but to reveal aspects of existence that have not yet been known.
